Theology and Social studies

The certificate program “Theology and Social studies” is aimed at students enrolled at Trier University and the Faculty of Theology in Trier, for example, those studying education, various teacher training courses, psychology, and social work. Quite a few students of these subjects will take up careers in church-run institutions. What's more, in their actual work and practice, social professions will always touch on theological issues and come into contact with people in extreme situations. Examples include work in charitable institutions, life counseling, and youth welfare, but also school social work, prevention, and youth welfare offices.

The certificate program aims to add theological value to the specialized training offered in the individual degree programs and subjects and to impart basic theological knowledge. In particular, the basic and advanced modules focus on familiarizing students with the Christian view of God and humanity, Christian social teaching, and the (liturgical and sacramental) practices of the faith community, as well as examining moral theological issues and providing insight into the methods and practice of religious education.

The certificate program does not replace a degree in theology. Rather, its aim is to impart a familiarity with fundamental beliefs—something that can no longer be taken for granted today—and to guide students toward reflective ethical discourse. Especially for professions in church-run institutions, the certificate program is also intended to promote understanding of Christian social principles and to foster communication and language skills in the context of faith, church, and theology.
